“Baseball Player Became a Hero Right During The Match”: Jim Rice Saved a Boy Who Was Hit In The Head By a Ball!
On August 7, 1982, an important event took place at the stadium in Fenway Park – the opening of the baseball season. The Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox competed on the field.
A 4-year-old boy named Jonathan Keen was also present at the important event. He, with his father and two-year-old brother, sat behind the first dugout. Unfortunately, a joyful day turned into a tragedy for the whole family. Jonathan received a strong blow to the head.
Everyone was very scared and did not know how to react. The father of the child, Tom, did not immediately understand what had happened. It seemed to him that the ball hit the dugout. But the reality turned out to be much worse. His 4 year old son was lying on the ground unconscious and there was a huge bleeding wound on the boy’s head.
Without hesitation, Red Sox player Jim Rice jumped out of the dugout, took the child in his arms and carried the boy to the clubhouse. Team doctor Arthur Pappas certainly rushed to the rescue. The medical team led by the doctor did everything they could. The boy was then sent to Boston Children’s Hospital. They acted quickly, everything lasted for about three minutes.
Rai handed over the baby to the doctors, and he returned to the fieald. The photographer who filmed the game was able to capture the moment when Rice was carrying Jonathan in his arms.
The boy was immediately operated on. The pressure of the edema on the brain was reduced. Due to the fact that Rice quickly responded, the doctors were able to provide the necessary assistance in time and prevent the irreversible consequences of brain damage.
The boy’s parents were overly grateful to the player. If not the prompt actions of the player, it is not known what could have happened. The boy’s father was so shocked that he did not know what to do and how to help his son.
For five days he was in critical condition. The boy was small then and does not remember what happened that day. As a reminder, he had a scar above his eye.
“I became successful in my sport. But as for something really important, this is probably the story when I climbed into the stands and pulled out a child who was hit by a dirty ball, ” Rice once admitted.
He played for the Red Sox for 16 years and achieved tremendous success. On July 26, 2009, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
As for Jonathan, the boy received a good education and now he is the CEO of a great company. He is married and has three children.
